We are delighted to have recently welcomed Ellen to the Augmentum Investment Team as an Associate. Learn about why she chose to make the leap from consultancy into VC, and what it is about fintech in particular that appeals.
Why did you choose to move into venture capital?
My experience draws from working in early stage companies (e.g. people analytics SaaS startup Bunch.ai) and carrying out deal due diligence as a strategy consultant (at OC&C). Venture capital allows me to leverage my knowledge from both of those worlds and offers a huge number of things to learn. It’s also exciting to spend time thinking about how markets will develop in the future and I like the variety that comes from meeting a broad range of companies with innovative ideas.
Augmentum stood out for a number of reasons; the fintech sector focus, listed fund structure and the entrepreneurial experience of the team. I was really impressed by the portfolio the team have built in a short space of time and I felt I could make an impact as we continue to grow.
What is it about the fintech ecosystem that you find most exciting?
I love the size of the opportunities and the complexity which often goes along with them. Spending time thinking deeply about a particular area of innovation is really rewarding, especially when you can dig into it further with an inspiring founding team!
If you could work at one of the Augmentum portfolio companies, which would it be?
It would probably be Onfido. Their KYC-onboarding product for fintechs is a major improvement to the incumbent solution of in-branch, in-person ID checks. The applications of this technology also extend far beyond onboarding in fintech so it’s really just the beginning for them. They also tap into the data flywheel whereby their machine learning is enriched by every additional check.
What do you get up to outside the office?
When I moved to London, I discovered hot yoga and now try to do it as much as possible – it’s a great antidote to working at a desk and becomes even more appealing as Winter sets in. I’m also hoping to get involved with a mentoring scheme for teenagers as I would like to play a part in encouraging young people to achieve their education and career goals.
