Augmentum featured in Citywire Wealth Manager’s “Private equity: the state of play in the UK” piece on 6th August 2020.
“At Wellian Investment Solutions, wealth manager Richard Philbin gets exposure to private markets both by investing in dedicated private equity funds such as 3i and the venture capital fund Augmentum which provides exposure to unlisted fintech firms.
‘I’ve invested in Augmentum for a number of our clients and portfolios,’ he explains. ‘It’s a really good diversifier, but it does come with different risks. It’s less liquid, so those kind of investments do depend on client tolerances.’
However, Philbin strongly believes that private equity markets are the future, because of the new ways in which many companies are raising capital.
‘The face of capitalism is changing,’ he says. ‘Ten years ago, companies would have to come to the capital markets to raise funding, but now because they’re staying private for longer, they can offer unlisted shares so if they do list, they retain full control over the business. It’s all changing and if investors want to get exposure to these sorts of companies, they have to play the private debt game.’”
